Printmaking Press FAQ

When will you list more presses?

Getting the materials to make presses can take some time, so I’ve decided to gather materials and then create a batch of presses, rather than follow typical made to order set up. The best way to be alerted when I make a new batch is to sign up for my newsletter here. I tend to make one batch per season. And they tend to sell out quickly. So sign up! Or follow me on Instagram. I always let my followers know.

What kind of inks work with this press?

I recommend water based inks. These inks transfer well and don’t require as much pressure. They’re less finicky about the amount of pressure used or paper soaking time. I’ve also used Akua with reliable results. Akua seems to require longer paper soaking time and more pressure. Oil based ink works well for relief printing. However, I can not at this time recommend oil based ink for intaglio printmaking. I have heard of customers successfully printing their etchings with oil based ink, and I have done it successfully, but I need to do more research before I can personally recommend it. (If you’d like to try, I do accept returns.)

Do you still offer the Magic Pressbed or Registration Pressbed?

Not at this time. To be posted on new developments follow me on Instagram sign up for the newsletter.

What are the differences between the Pocket Press Kit, the Magic Pressbed, and the Registration Pressbed set ups?

The Kit in a Box and the Magic Pressbed set up are both good for pressing prints using wet paper only. While intaglio and monotype prints always use wet paper, sometimes relief printers don’t want wet paper.

The Registration Platen set up is for relief printmakers who want to use dry paper and/or create reduction prints. The pegs make registration easy. All you need is a hole punch.

What are the advantages of a Magic Pressbed over a Kit in a Box?

The Magic Pressbed can be used on tables or counter tops that cannot be clipped onto. It has a larger printmaking surface area, and is easier to store and set up. It makes experimental printmaking processes like emboss or printing leaves easier because it is a firmer surface that better prevents objects from moving when the press rolls over them.

Can you press etchings with a Registration Platen set up?

Yes. You will need to use wet paper, and the pegs will limit the size of your plate because your press will not be able to roll past the pegs.

Do you offer bulk discounts?

Yes. Please contact me at Diana [at] printmakingpress.com. I love teachers.

Where else can I buy a pocket press?

This is it. I can make you a special order through Etsy if you prefer. Or ask your local art store to contact me!

Can you help me with my press?

Absolutely. I consider it part of my job to coach customers on printing and give advice about supplies. Contact me at Diana [at] printmakingpress.com with any questions.

Press Building Plans

I can’t find a part. What do I do?

A) Not all materials are carried by all hardware stores. However, your local hardware store can special order the part you need. I found my parts at my local ACE Hardware store. When I switched to a new hardware store, they used their large supply catalog to find and special order what I needed. They can do this for you.

B) You can also order parts online through Amazon or eBay or Home Depot online. Hardware measurements are listed by inner diameter x outer diameter x length. I refer to outer diameter as width in my instructions.

C) You may find that you don’t need to use the same part I list in the building plans. Try a different kind of screw. Find a pipe of the same width and cut it. Visit my @printmakingpress Instagram stories tab to see DIY presses with creative parts: https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17866711963620357/

D) My measurements are given in fractions of an inch. Be aware that you may need to convert to decimals or mm. Google is great at this! Be aware that decimals may be rounded up.

D) Not a builder after all? Every download includes a coupon for $2 to put towards a press made by me.

Policies

When will I receive my order? Typically, in 1-3 weeks. Each press and pressbed is made by me by hand. Each kit is made to order and takes several days to make. When I run out of materials it can take days to weeks to restock. Let me know if you need an order quickly and I will work with you. I ship Pocket Press Kits using First Class Mail (average of 1-3 days) and Pressbed set ups using Priority Mail (average of 1-2 days). What about overseas orders? Overseas orders can take up to a month or slightly more because shipping time varies. Be aware that your country may charge custom or import taxes that you are responsible for. Customs can also cause delays, and they sometimes hold orders. Do you accept returns? Yes, but please contact me first if you are having trouble printing. I have been able to coach all of my customers with printing issues and have had no returns yet. If you would like to return your press you will be refunded the price of your order. Shipping cannot be refunded.
